Major Philanthropic Grant Will Create New Center to Advance Open-Source Software
The Georgia Tech College of Computing has received an $11 million grant from Schmidt Futures to create one of the four software engineering centers within the newly launched Virtual Institute for Scientific Software. The new center will hire software engineers to write scalable, reliable, and portable open-source software for scientific research.

When Garrett Brown first enrolled at Georgia Tech, he had a passion for cybersecurity but was unsure where to gain additional hands-on experience in the field. Brown found the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program, where students can earn academic credit while working with faculty on projects they don't typically encounter in the classroom.
Tech ‘Trailblazers’ to Receive 2022 Ivan Allen Jr. Prize
Ford Greene, Ralph Long Jr., and Lawrence Williams, Georgia Tech’s first Black students, and Ronald Yancey, Tech’s first Black graduate, have been named recipients of the Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage.
Student Survey Underway to Assess Georgia Tech Culture

Student Microchip Startup Reduces Energy Waste, Amplifies Power Systems
In 2015, Edgar Garay sent an email to a Georgia Tech professor asking to join his lab. He wanted to improve the efficiency of power amplifiers. Now, his work is enabling wireless carriers in the 5G space to cut energy waste, boost the speed of data transmission, and increase how much data can be moved at any one time.
Students interested in examining media from an analytical perspective and learning how race intersects with contemporary social factors will soon be able to enroll in the new Black Media Studies minor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication.
Georgia Tech to Offer Expanded Symptomatic Covid-19 Testing
Starting Wednesday, Jan. 12, Georgia Tech will offer a drive-thru, symptomatic Covid-19 diagnostic testing site to address the immediate testing needs for students, faculty, and staff. This site will welcome any symptomatic Georgia Tech faculty and staff, as well as symptomatic students who are unable to make an appointment at Stamps.
The 11th Annual MLK Lecture will feature Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The event kicks off Georgia Tech’s annual celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
